چکیده

This study has been facilitated by an NSF/ESRC exchange programme between researchers at the University of Chicago and the University of Nottingham. At the University of Nottingham the National Centre for e-Social Science node seeks to explore, understand and demonstrate the salience of new forms of digital record as they emerge from and for eSocial Science. The Nottingham Multimodal Corpus (NMMC) is a corpus of multimodal data that marries established coding schemes with visual mark-up systems to foster a richer understanding of the embodied nature of language use and its manifold relations to the production of distinctive social contexts. At the University of Chicago, the NSF-funded Social Informatics Data Grid (SIDGrid) is being built to enable researchers to collect realtime multimodal behaviour at multiple time scales. Multimedia data (voice, video, images, text, numerical) is stored in a distributed data warehouse that employs Web and Grid services to support data storage, access, exploration, annotation, integration, analysis, and mining of individual and combined data sets. With particular reference to the analysis of and markup of hand gestures in spoken discourse, this paper explores some basic steps in integrating cyberinfrastructure into existing e-Social Science research as an interdisciplinary team with perspectives from linguistics, psychology, data and computing systems, and machine analysis of multi-modal data.

Integrating Cutting-edge Research into Learning through Web 2.0 and Virtual Environments

In this paper, we report on the initial design and implementation of a project entitled RE@L Research Environments Associated with Learning through Social Networks. Our goal is to examine how future science gateways that rely on immersive virtual environments and Web 2.0 technologies can bridge the gap between research and education. To this end, we strategically apply middleware technologies i...

Advanced Cyberinfrastructure for Science, Engineering, and Public Policy

Progress in many domains increasingly benefits from our ability to view the systems through a computational lens, i.e., using computational abstractions of the domains; and our ability to acquire, share, integrate, and analyze disparate types of data. These advances would not be possible without the advanced data and computational cyberinfrastructure and tools for data capture, integration, ana...

Integrating distributed data grid, ontology and Web-based workflow technologies into geospatial cyberinfrastructure: system design and case study

Geospatial research increasingly relies on shared geospatial data, interconnected models and successively refined analysis which requires not only more powerful but also more accessible cyberinfrastructure systems for support. In this study, we propose to integrate data grid, ontology and Web-based workflow technologies to build more accessible cyberinfrastructure systems for geospatial computi...

Digging into Metadata : Enhancing Social Science and Humanities Research 1

Metadata ‘data about data’ is a crucial component of information infrastructures that supports the finding, retrieving and sharing of resources; metadata in the social sciences and humanities helps researchers, educators, students and others to share data and information, and to collaborate in research, education and learning. Metadata work is highly resource intensive, and there can be signifi...

Spatial cyberinfrastructures, ontologies, and the humanities.

We report on research into building a cyberinfrastructure for Chinese biographical and geographic data. Our cyberinfrastructure contains (i) the McGill-Harvard-Yenching Library Ming Qing Women's Writings database (MQWW), the only online database on historical Chinese women's writings, (ii) the China Biographical Database, the authority for Chinese historical people, and (iii) the China Historic...
